As an Australian flying back from Europe we
are spoilt for choice. We can fly either via, the US, Asia or Africa. I chose
to fly home via the US on this trip, first stopping in New York.

On my first day I decided to walk the
familiar streets to get my bearings, 5th Ave, Madison Ave, Park Ave,
Lexington Ave. I stopped by the Rockefeller Centre to see the ice skating rink,
the famous Prometheus sculptor and tree, and the wonderful window displays of
the department stores.

There is a certain magic to visiting the
Northern Hemisphere during the Christmas season, especially New York. I can’t
think of any other city that goes all out at Christmas time. Oh to be a kid
again, it must be just wonderful for the ‘little people’. All the department
stores had the most beautiful window decorations, the stand out for me were the
window decorations of Henri Bedel, so creative and rich in colour, texture and
design.

Don’t be put off by the cold, the Christmas
season does add another whole dimension to travel and New York doesn’t
disappoint. In fact it is a Christmas destination for many Americans, it has an
energy unlike any other city.
