Beach Blanket Babylon is so much fun. The show, created by Steve Silver in 1974, is the longest running musical comedy in the USA. Known for its outrageous hats, the show is constant updated and still a total lark.
The principal plot revolves around Snow White searching the world for a “Prince Charming.” In the current version, Snow encounters topical pop culture characters such as President Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Tiger Woods, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, The Jonas Brothers, Susan Boyle, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Taylor Swift & Kanye West, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears.
Also present are long running characters such as Glinda the Good Witch, Louis XIV, Oprah Winfrey, Tina Turner, Carmen Miranda, Elvis Presley, a band of dancing French Poodles, and Snow White’s tour guide, a female narrator who takes on several incarnations from an Italian Pizza Lady to a Japanese Cowgirl.
The show is all about San Francisco and California. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Dianne Feinstein, politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk who was killed in a hate crime, rolling blackouts by PG&E, the legalization of gay marriage in San Francisco by Mayor Gavin Newsom, and the controversy surrounding Prop. 8 are all topics for parody in the latest rendition of this hilarious show.
We love the show so much that we recently had our own schlep BBB hat made for trade events. Dario and KC wore it last week in Las Vegas. Fun, fun, fun.
